Grade 1 Periodontal Disease • Light tartar & infection above the gum line • Tooth roots and bone not yet infected • Gums tender, but teeth not yet painful • Completely reversible with treatment Without treatment, it will progress to higher grades of POD. |

Grade 2 Periodontal Disease • Tartar and infection are spreading below the gums to the tooth root and jaw bone • Gums are tender, may have mild tooth root pain • Still completely reversible with treatment Without treatment, it will progress to higher grades of POD. |

Grade 3 Periodontal Disease • Infection is eating away the gums, tooth root, and jaw bone • Tooth roots still intact, but starting to loosen • Significant tooth and bone pain • Bone loss is irreversible, but tooth may be salvaged by controlling infection with regular dental cleanings and strict home care |

Grade 4 Periodontal Disease • Infection has eaten away the gums and bone, leaving the tooth root exposed • Severe tooth and bone pain • Irreversible damage may require extraction of the tooth to eliminate infection and pain in the jaw bone |
